E3 2010! Lot of noise about motion-control with Microsoft and Sony announcing the Microsoft Kinect and the Playstation Move. Good for them! It's not like Nintendo did the same thing 4 years ago with the Wii and now has a new enhanced set of motion-based-controllers! But that's OK, because Sony just announced Full-3D gaming capabilities for the PS3! Kaz Hirai, the president of Sony's Networked Products and Services group, touted the company's "end-to-end" 3D offerings, from its Bravia 3D TVs to its new roster of 3D-enabled games for the PlayStation 3.
But then Nintendo President Saturo Iwata stepped up and officially announced the successor to the Nintendo DS, the Nintendo 3DS, the first-ever portable 3D gaming system. Full-3D gaming without any fancy GPUs or 3D glasses and oh yea! You can put it in your pocket and prance about as well! Hit the link below to check out the video and more.
So what's it got?
1. 2 Screens. The upper screen is a 3.5” widescreen display while the lower is a touch screen
2. A 3D slider on the side, allowing you to control the depth of 3D!
3. Major graphical enhancements
4. Iwata stressed Wi-Fi connectivity, stating that the console would be able to interact with other 3DS systems while asleep; however no details were given.
5. Along with the standard controls available on the older DS, the 3DS features a “Slide Pad”, an analog controller as well as a gyro and a motion-sensor.
6. 2 rear-mounted cameras, that allow you to capture 3D pictures and view them on the 3Ds as well!!! Another camera lens rests above the top screen,
7. The 3DS will also be capable of playing back 3D movies.
8. The 3DS is also compatible with standard Nintendo DS games.
9. Partnerships were also announced for exclusive 3D movie content for the 3DS including Disney (Tangled), Warner Brothers (Legends of the Guardian), and Dreamworks (How to Train a Dragon).
10. Other than Kid Icarus Uprising, the only other first-party title announced for the 3DS was virtual pet game Nintendogs, which will now apparently include cats as well. Nintendo has since announced that first-party titles including Mario Kart, PilotWings Resort, Animal Crossing, StarFox 64 3D, Steel Diver, and Paper Mario are all in development as well.
11. There is also an impressive list of third-party developers . Among the dozens of companies, EA, Activision, Atlus, Harmonix, Sega, T2, Ubisoft, Konami, and Capcom all were said to be busy developing titles. These games and franchises include Kingdom Hearts, Saints Row, Metal Gear Solid Snake Eater 3D, Madden, FIFA Soccer, Ninja Gaiden, Resident Evil Revelations, The Sims 3, Batman, DJ Hero 3D, Assassin's Creed, Ridge Racer, Professor Layton and the Mask of Miracles, Samurai Warriors, Battle Giants: Dinosaur Strike, and Hollywood 61.
Unfortunately no price or release date was announced at Nintendo's E3 unveiling of the 3DS, but you can be sure that a gaming revolution is on the horizon.
