Towards A Better Today

New York is hosting the Greener Gadgets Conference this year on February 25th and here are some of designs that caught my eye:

1. Turbine Light

An offspring of a certain TAK Studio  in the USA, I found this design revolutionary. Although the details haven't really come out yet, the design seems very simple. It involves harnessing the air turbulence caused by cars and other automobiles on a highway. Small turbines installed on each streetlight would use the wind energy to power the lights and light the highway. I'd give this design a ten-on-ten if it wasn't for one reservation of mine. From what I understand from experience, the wind from a car is felt by a stationary object a split-second after the car has passed the object. This would mean that the light would turn on after the car passes the turbine. So, this design would fail on a highway that doesn't see too much traffic, during the night, for example.

Of course, such a downfall can be easily addressed by employing some sort of storage of the generated electrical energy or powering only the first light of the highway, installing the turbine on this powered streetlight and using the energy generated by this turbine to power the next light. Now, the details aren't out, so it's possible such a con in the design may have already been addressed.

2. Fair Energy Clock

This is another invention that I found really helpful in saving energy. If you think about it, there are quite a few devices in a household that don't require power round the clock. This innovation is a simple three-pin plug that goes into the power-socket in the wall. The plug consists of an analog dial that allows you to choose which hours of the day you wish the plug to allow passage of electrical energy through it. For example, a cell-phone really only needs a couple of hours of charging. So, you could program this device to supply the charger with energy only for a couple hours of the day. Fascinating.
